Johann Georg WALDREICH (engraver of the German school active in Augsbourg from 1660 to 1680) "Ancient vase in Palazzo Medici" Original etching signed in the plate on the bottom right "JG Waldreich Sculp" from a drawing by Johachim von Sandrart from the collection entitled "Der Teutsche Academie" or "The German Academy of Architecture, Sculpture & Painting" published in Nuremberg in 1675-79. Nice specimen printed on laid paper, with good margins beyond the imprint of the slab, some traces of burnishing on the edges but overall in good general condition. It is one of the most beautiful and sought after tables in the entire work. Painter, engraver and art history scholar, Sandrart also had Aegidius Sadeler among his masters during a youthful stay in Prague. Driven by various family and professional events, he traveled extensively through Europe making himself appreciated by the Sovereigns and High Prelates who commissioned him numerous works; in London he met Charles I and during the years of his important Roman stay he was employed by Cardinal Barberini and Prince Giustiniani. On his return to Germany he retired to Nuremberg where he founded an academy and published various works of art history resulting from a life of passionate scholar and collector. The Teutsche Academie is the most significant evidence of this. Bibliography: Nagler "Neues Allgemeines Kunstler Lexicon" Leipzig sd vol.XXIII pag.464 n ° 7. Measurements in mm: 312 x 206
